Let’s take some time to focus on what puts the “e” in any “e-scooter”—the electric battery that powers your way down the road.
The battery makes your e-scooter. Keeping it top shape means keeping the whole e-scooter in top shape. Following a few basic tips for keeping your e-scooter battery in top condition will significantly extend its working life and your satisfaction while you’re out and about on two wheels.
It might strike you as rather strange, but depleting your e-scooter’s battery through regular and even heavy use isn’t the primary cause of damage to the way it operates. It was designed and made to do exactly what it does—provide the power to move you forward. Ironically, the biggest threat to the battery’s performance is not being used. And since a sub-optimal battery means a sub-optimal e-scooter, battery inactivity is something you need to be careful about.
Lithium-ion batteries have certain requirements for keeping them in top shape that are rooted in their electro-chemistry, a topic that, let’s say, is just a little outside of our focus here.
Tips for better trips
All you need to know is that the golden rule of maintaining battery health is don’t let the battery charge drain completely. We cannot stress this enough. When batteries are allowed to deplete all the way down to a 0% charge and stay there, it causes cell ruptures that reduce the battery’s overall capacity when a recharge is finally started.
You may have noticed this in the performance of batteries in other devices. While a gradual decline in battery life is to be expected over hundreds and sometimes thousands of charge cycles, the process is accelerated when you let the battery completely discharge.
Here’s another tip from the other end of the scale and this comes from the leading brands that make the class of batteries used in most e-scooters today. When you put your e-scooter away for an extended time—let’s say more than a week or so—it’s best to not leave it plugged in and charging all the time.
The best way to preserve the battery’s health is to fully charge it before storing, let it self-discharge normally while not in use and recharge it for about an hour during longer periods of inactivity—in winter, for example—until it is returned to normal use.
This means not putting your e-scooter away and forgetting about it during the long winter months. Make it a point to charge it periodically to avoid depleting the battery completely. This might not be your preferred way of spending your time but isn’t your investment in your e-scooter worth the slight inconvenience now and then?
JIVR | Scooter batteries
As long as we’re on the subject, let’s share some basic info about the batteries you’ll find on both models of JIVR | Scooter.
As we’ve mentioned before, JIVR | Scooter’s battery is safely encased inside its construction and is protected against the elements and damage caused by dust. Depending on the model, the e-scooter’s 230Wh or 360Wh battery has a range of 20 or 40km. The charge time from empty to full is two hours for the smaller version and about four-and-a-half for the larger.
The charging mechanism is a conventional wall plug. Always use the charger that comes with the bike to charge the battery.
And a final word about the range of the battery. The 20 or 40km, depending on the model, is based on an average. There are many factors that can influence your actual results.
Temperature extremes are notoriously bad for battery performance and you’re much more likely to experience the colder end of that range, so winter days are definitely not the time to attempt a distance record. Your weight also has an influence, as does the amount of time you spend going up inclines and at higher speeds.
Keep these things in mind if you don’t get exactly 20 or 40km on one charge while racing up a mountain in a snowstorm after a huge meal!
